BAJ unveils structural and leadership changes to strengthen governance

The British Academy of Jewellery (BAJ) has implemented a series of structural and leadership changes aimed at strengthening governance, compliance and student experience.

The measures follow a regulator-advised pause in new student recruitment. The academy has since revised its management framework, operational processes and quality assurance systems to support long-term stability and future development.

Dr Matthew J. Williamson, a principal fellow of Advance HE, has been appointed principal. He brings more than 30 years’ experience in higher education leadership across Russell Group and specialist institutions, and has worked with national quality enhancement bodies including the Scottish Funding Council, GuildHE and Universities UK.

He is joined by Amir Shaikh, appointed chief operating officer after leading operational delivery and validation at BAJ since 2016. The academy’s new board of governors, chaired by Neal Sussman, a former marketing director at De Beers and Burberry, includes senior figures from academia, finance and the creative industries.

The academy confirmed that all current students continue to receive full teaching and support, and all graduating learners have received certificates. Outstanding refunds are being finalised in line with BAJ’s Student Protection Policy.

Additionally, BAJ is working with awarding bodies on a phased reopening of programmes and exploring new validation partnerships to support degree-level study.

The academy stated that its focus remains on developing future creative and professional talent within the jewellery and wider design industries.

Dr Williamson said: “This period has allowed us to strengthen BAJ’s foundations and ensure our students continue to receive high-quality, industry-relevant education. Our vision is to empower learners to thrive, and we are committed to delivering on that mission with integrity and confidence.”
