The Ultimate Luxury Slovenia Itinerary: Our First-Hand Guide

A luxury Slovenia itinerary has been on our radar for a long time – from the picturesque capital city of Ljubljana to Lake Bled and a whole host of hidden gems scattered across the country.

What we found across five days was genuinely surprising. This isn’t a destination that deals in flashy luxury. Instead, Slovenia’s version of high-end travel is woven through Michelin-starred restaurants in medieval castles, panoramic InterContinental rooftops, thermal spa retreats in the hills, and one of the most extraordinary theatrical events we’ve ever attended. If you’re planning a luxury trip to Slovenia, this is exactly the kind of itinerary to follow.

Day 1: Flying into Ljubljana

Fly into Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport from most major European hubs. From London it’s a straightforward two-hour and 15 minute flight, and the airport is compact and easy to navigate. Most flights arrive in the afternoon so we recommend transferring straight to your hotel.

We chose the InterContinental Ljubljana on Slovenska cesta – the transfer takes around 25 minutes. The hotel sits right in the centre of the city and the views from the rooms across the rooftops toward the Alps make an immediate impression.

The InterContinental Ljubljana is a genuinely convenient base. Rooms are sleek and spacious, the Serenity Spa on the 18th floor is a lovely spot to unwind after travel, and the staff are warm and attentive. For a city this size – Ljubljana has a population of around 300,000 – having a property of this standard is a real asset.

For dinner on your first evening, we recommend eating at the InterContinental itself – we dined in both the restaurant and the bar during our stay and enjoyed both. The food is excellent and it’s a relaxed way to settle in after a day of travel. Order the truffle fries; you won’t regret it.

Day 2: Lake Bled

No luxury Slovenia itinerary is complete without a visit to Lake Bled, and it makes perfect sense as a day trip from Ljubljana. Take a taxi for the most direct route – the drive takes around 45 minutes – or travel by train if you prefer, though the journey is considerably longer.

The lake itself is everything the photographs promise, perhaps more so. On our visit, the iconic Heart of Bled sculpture by the water’s edge was still adorned with artificial blossoms from the Month of Love activation (starting each year on 14 February) – a charming detail that made it even more photogenic. The blossoms have since been removed, but the sculpture remains one of the most photographed spots in Slovenia and is well worth seeking out.

From the lake shore, take a traditional wooden pletna boat out to Bled Island – the only natural island in Slovenia – and climb the 99 steps to the Church of the Assumption at the top. Ring the church bell three times and make a wish, as tradition dictates.

For lunch, the Park Hotel’s restaurant overlooking the lake is an excellent choice. The setting is hard to beat, and whatever you order, don’t leave without trying the famous Bled Cake – a vanilla cream slice with a crisp pastry base that has been made to the same recipe here since 1953. It is as good as its reputation.

If you have more time than we did, Bled Castle perched on the cliff above the lake is well worth the climb. A hike to one of the Bled viewpoints such as Mala Osojnica, Ojstrica, and Velika Osojnica offers some of the most spectacular panoramas in the country. Both go on our list for the return trip.

Head back to Ljubljana after lunch. For dinner on your first evening, we recommend JAZ by Ana Roš. If you follow the world of fine dining, you’ll know Ana Roš – she’s one of the most celebrated chefs in Europe, renowned for her restaurant Hiša Franko. JAZ is her more casual concept, and it’s brilliant.

The food celebrates Slovenian seasonal produce in a way that’s creative without being overwrought, and the atmosphere is genuinely lively. Plates are designed for sharing, so order generously.

Day 3: Ljubljana City Tour and Onwards to Dobrna

Don’t miss a guided walking tour of Ljubljana’s city centre – we started at the Tourist Information Centre on the riverbank and took in the Triple Bridge, Old Town Square, the Cathedral and the Dragon Bridge along the way.

The area around the Ljubljanica River bears the distinctive mark of Jože Plečnik, the Slovenian architect who redesigned much of the city in the early twentieth century, and once you understand his vision it completely transforms how you read the buildings and bridges around you.

Build in time for both the Cukrarna Gallery and the National Gallery of Slovenia – two very different spaces that between them give a strong sense of Slovenia’s artistic identity.

For lunch, we recommend Ljubljančanka, a traditional Slovenian restaurant near the central market. This is the kind of place that does the classics well – hearty, seasonal, honest cooking – and it’s an ideal introduction to Slovenian food culture before the more elevated dining experiences ahead.

From Ljubljana, transfer south to Dobrna, a small spa town in a valley that feels a world away from the capital. Terme & Spa Dobrna is a thermal resort built around natural mineral springs, and Hotel Švicerija is an upmarket place to stay within the complex. The hotel’s Spa Suites each boast their own private hot tub and in our case, a private terrace on the first floor.

For dinner, Mlečna Marjanca is a convenient choice – thoughtfully curated local wines and seasonal dishes in a quiet, elegant setting that suits the surroundings perfectly. It’s only a few minutes walk from the Spa Suites.

Day 4: Celje, Laško and Maribor

Start with time in Celje, a historic town on the Savinja River shaped by the legacy of the Counts of Celje – one of the most powerful noble dynasties in medieval Central Europe. The old town is easy to explore on foot and has a relaxed, lived-in quality that some of the more tourist-heavy destinations in the region lack.

From the town, a short drive takes you up to Celje Castle – the largest medieval castle in Slovenia – perched dramatically on the hill above. The scale of it is impressive, and the historical drama attached to it even more so. The story of Frederick II and Veronica of Desenice alone is worth reading up on before you visit.

Lunch at PAVUS, Laško – a highlight of the trip

From Celje Castle, drive to Laško for lunch at Pavus – a Michelin-starred restaurant housed inside the historic Tabor Castle, and one of our favourite recommendations in this entire itinerary. Chef Marko Pavčnik’s cuisine draws almost entirely from the forests, meadows and farms of the surrounding region, and the result is deeply rooted, seasonal cooking that manages to feel both inventive and grounded.

Paul and I have eaten at a number of Michelin-starred restaurants and PAVUS is amongst the very best. Remember to book ahead.

From Laško, transfer to Maribor, Slovenia’s second city, for a guided tour of the old town. Maribor holds the title of European Best Wine Capital for 2026, and its trump card is a remarkable one: the world’s oldest living grapevine, over 400 years old, growing on the façade of the Old Vine House in the Lent district. Don’t miss the wine tasting here, and make time for the Vinag 1847 wine cellar too – the wines are far better than you might expect.

We recommend Rožmarin for dinner – a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant with a strong wine programme. Stay overnight at Hotel City Maribor, right on the banks of the Drava River.

Day 5: Škofja Loka and the Passion Play

Drive from Maribor to Škofja Loka – one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Slovenia and the most culturally distinctive stop on this itinerary. The cobbled streets, coloured facades and hilltop castle create a genuinely atmospheric setting, and it’s the sort of place that rewards slow wandering.

We suggest having lunch at Gostilna Inglič before joining a guided walking tour of the town. But the real reason to be here, if the timing aligns, is the Škofja Loka Passion Play – one of the oldest theatrical traditions in Slovenia, performed on a huge scale across the town’s medieval streets and squares.

We attended the general rehearsal, which gives rare behind-the-scenes access, and it is one of the most extraordinary things either of us has experienced on a press trip. The sheer scale of the production – hundreds of performers, authentic period costumes, dramatic use of the town’s architecture as a stage set – is genuinely arresting, and deeply moving in a way we don’t anticipate. If you’re travelling to Slovenia and the timing aligns, do not miss this.

From Škofja Loka it’s a 30-minute drive back to the InterContinental Ljubljana for a final night in the capital before flying back the next day.

Day 6: Final Morning in Ljubljana

If your flight home is in the afternoon, Ljubljana’s city centre offers a lovely final few hours. Take a morning walk through Tivoli Park – the city’s elegant green lung, just a short stroll from the InterContinental.

Head back into the old town to seek out Cobblers’ Bridge, one of Plečnik’s most charming creations, and the riverside Central Market, which is at its best in the morning when local producers are set up along the colonnade. It’s a relaxed and unhurried way to say goodbye to a city that rewards slow exploration.

Is Slovenia Worth It as a Luxury Destination?

Without question! Slovenia is a country with extraordinary natural beauty, a serious food culture, deep historical heritage, and the good sense not to overcrowd itself with mass tourism. It moves at the right pace for the kind of traveller who wants to genuinely absorb a place rather than simply tick boxes.

We came back with a long list of things we didn’t have time to do – the Soča Valley, Piran on the Adriatic coast – and that is perhaps the best possible recommendation. Slovenia rewards multiple visits, and we’re already planning our return.
