Tom Moses, executive vice president and chief laboratory and research officer at the Gemological Institute of America, will leave the organisation in May 2026.
Moses, who joined the GIA in 1976, has held various leadership roles and will be named chief of gemological research, emeritus, upon his departure.
During his tenure, he oversaw the institute’s international expansion, which now includes 10 laboratories and seven schools across 10 countries.
He was elected to the GIA board of governors in 2013 and has co-authored more than 100 technical articles for peer-reviewed journals.
Over the next three months, Moses will focus on transitioning research and laboratory management to the existing leadership teams.
His career began in the Santa Monica laboratory before he moved to New York to work under Robert Crowningshield.
Moses was a key figure in establishing the grading standards used globally by the institute today.
The GIA confirmed that the transition has been planned for several years. Moses will continue to support research efforts and client relations through May to maintain operational continuity.
In 2002, he received the Richard T. Liddicoat Award for Distinguished Achievement, the institute’s highest honor.
Pritesh Patel, GIA president and CEO, said: “The rigor Tom brought to grading, the discipline he brought to science, and the focus he brought to our customers reflect what we aspire to be. Fifty years has been a period of growth driven by Tom’s commitment, curiosity and leadership. His legacy lives in the standards he helped shape and the generations of professionals he guided.”
Moses added: “I have been privileged to work with gemologists and have them as my mentors. I will always be grateful to Richard Liddicoat for hiring me and for his guidance, and to Robert Crowningshield, with whom I worked closely for 20 years, for sharing his knowledge and for his friendship. There is no better way to honor their legacy than through continued research.”
